PM Surya Ghar Yojna: A New Step in the Energy Sector

The Government of India launched the PM Surya Ghar Yojna on 29th February 2024, with the aim of empowering residential households to generate their own electricity. The scheme has a budget of ₹75,021 crores and will be implemented until the financial year 2026-27.

Objectives of the Scheme

The primary objective of the PM Surya Ghar Yojna is to promote the use of solar energy in households. This initiative will not only reduce dependency on traditional energy sources but will also raise awareness about environmental issues. The scheme will be implemented nationally by a National Program Implementation Agency (NPIA) and at the state level by State Implementation Agencies (SIAs).

How the Scheme Works

Under the scheme, subsidies will be provided for solar systems up to a capacity of 3 kilowatts:

  • 60% subsidy on systems with a capacity of up to 2 kW.
  • 40% subsidy on systems with a capacity between 2 to 3 kW.

The subsidy is capped at 3 kW.

Details of the Subsidy

  • 1 kW system: ₹30,000 subsidy
  • 2 kW system: ₹60,000 subsidy
  • 3 kW or above system: ₹78,000 subsidy

Thus, this scheme will help make solar energy accessible to every household.

Eligibility Criteria

To benefit from the scheme, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be an Indian citizen.
  • Must own a house with a roof suitable for solar panel installation.
  • The house must have a valid electricity connection.
  • The family must not have availed any other subsidy for solar panels.

Application Process

Interested consumers must first register on the National Portal. During registration, they will need to select their state and electricity distribution company. The national portal will provide consumers with relevant information, such as appropriate system sizes, subsidy calculators, and vendor ratings. Consumers will then be able to choose a suitable vendor and select the brand of their rooftop solar unit.
